Upon launching iMovie, it opens to a black screen. Unable to access the menu bar or close the window. Have to use the key command to quit. Deleted the iMovie app and associated files and did a fresh reinstall but the problem persists. Using a MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7 with OS 10.15.4.
Any help would be so appreciated!

One possible cause is corrupt preference files. Reinstalling iMovie does NOT get rid of them.
If FCP X/iMovie start behaving unexpectedly in any way for no apparent reason, the problem could be caused by corrupt preference files.
The cure for this is to delete the preferences.
Hold down the Cmd and Option keys as you launch FCP X/iMovie and a window will appear asking if you wish to delete the preferences.
Click “Delete Preferences” and FCP X/iMovie will open in the default (as-new) mode with no projects etc. on the interface.
You will have to navigate to any project you were working on and reopen it.
Deleting preferences is completely safe and because of its simplicity it should be the first thing you do when troubleshooting.

Just noticed Rich's link does list deleting the preferences but it calls it "Resetting iMovie".

The link is not very well organized and puts "Resetting" toward the end. I agree with you that deleting preferences usually should be the first troubleshooting procedure to try.
