Hi how do I use the new imac 2020 model as an external display to my macbook pro 2019 model. I have macos catalina on both the devices. Target display doesn't work but can't I use it as display with thunderbolt type c cable? please help

So sad. In that case, I need to return my imac as i wanted to use it as external display for work. Thanks for your reply. But I don't know why this is discontinued! I reached out to apple support and one suggestion was to try thunderbolt 3 cable but they were not sure as well
That functionality was discontinued with the 2014 models. If the MBP needs an external display your only option (this means no work arounds) is to buy and external display for it.

Nope, using any cable it simply won't work. You return it, someone will be thrill to get a brand new refurbished iMac. Very nice machine, I just ordered 2 today, his and hers.
If you need a display, buy a display not a computer.
