Pictures lost

I'm missing a ton of pictures my husband and I had sent back and forth in our message thread. I got a new phone last year. I just noticed today when I was looking back at them. It's been since November, and I don't have my old phone. I backed the old one up with Icloud and had to buy more storage. Is there any way I can get those back?
