Won't let me erase hard drive to reformat to APFS

I'm trying to install Catalina. My hard drive (Macbook Pro 2017) did not reformat when I installed Mojave. I've backed up in two locations and ready to reformat to APFS. But when I go into Disk Utility it won't let me erase the drive. Is there a step I'm missing?

Mojave to Catalina I'm trying to update my MacBook Air with Catalina, but because my internal hard drive is not APFS, it won't load. I've already backed up my computer to an external drive and the cloud. I tried going in to Disk Utility to unmount and install, but Unmount was greyed out. Any suggestions???

Unable to upgrade from Mojave to Catalina because my disk is not formatted to APFS I purchased a MacBook Air with Mojave, and as I was setting it up, I tried to upgrade to Catalina. I received the error that my drive is not formatted to APFS, so I cannot upgrade? I tried going into Recovery mode and converting to APFS using Disk Utility, but I don’t even get the option under Edit to “Convert to APFS.” Is there a way I can completely reformat my computer and reinstall some version of MacOS so I can use APFS? BTW, I tried to reinstall MacOS in Recovery mode, and it only gave me the option to install Sierra, and the. Told me I couldn’t because I had a later version of MacOS (Mojave). thanks, dan

You have to be in Recovery Mode to erase an internal drive. Installing Catalina should format the drive as APFS.
