ipad pro magic keyboard unresponsive within pages app

When I switch between Pages and other apps like Safari, after returning to Pages, the magic keyboard becomes unresponsive. I have to click and unclick the read/edit toggle button to make it work again. This only happens in Pages, not in Word, for instance. Using the most recent versions of IOS and Pages.
