Apple Superdrive does not work when plugged in via an adapter into a newer MacBook Pro

We try to use the Mac Superdrive to read CDs on a MacBook Pro. Plugging in the Superdrive via an adapter into one of the USB-C ports of the MacBook Pro does not work. The Superdrive is perfectly functional because it works on a desktop computer (MacMini). Can you assist?
