I want to upgrade the operating system on my mac air 2012. I am currently running Sierra. I have 14.79 GB free. What can I upgrade to?

You cannot update to anything until you clear off at minimum, around 20 - 25 GB of storage. Then Catalina after a Time Machine backup.
