Can iMovie encode video in HEVC (h265) format?

Is it possible for iMovie to export video files in HEVC?

An Update to this question

While researching this question, I found that you can use Apple Quicktime to convert Apple ProRes to HEVC.

Steps

Open the video file with Quicktime
File ➫ Export As ➫ 1080p
At the bottom of the file dialogue box, select the HEVC checkbox.
Input your new file name and, select "Use HEVC". (See the below screenshot)

As you have found, iMovie can edit HEVC but not encode it as HEVC. The only encode options for iMovie 10 are Mp4 for all settings except Best Quality (pro res) that would give you a .mov file. Your method of using QuickTimePlayer to re-encode the clip to HEVC looks like it would work fine, assuming that you have confirmed that the re-encoded clip is actually HEVC.
