Connecting MacBook Pro (13inch, 2017) to iMac 21.5inch Late 2013 as external monitor

Hi,

I have been trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my old iMac in the hopes of using it as an external monitor, but not luck so far. I have used a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 directly as well as even trying a Thunderbolt 2 to HDMI to MacBook Pro but no luck so far.

Would love some help

Thanks

The MBP cannot be an external monitor for the iMac. No MBP was ever wired that way. Only certain iMac models were set up to also work as monitors.

You should be able to use the iMac as an external monitor for the MBP as long as the iMac is running no higher macOS version than 10.13 High Sierra. If it has 10.14 or 10.15 it will not work as an external monitor.
