Startup chime repeating, black screen

My MacBook Air is continuously chiming with the startup sound, the screen stays black. The first sound sounds normal, the following ones sounds static. Every other attempt the following sounds are shorter and quieter without static. I tried every key combination I could find, I am completely lost... can someone help me?
