Sony 2017 TVs do not support the Apple TV app or Apple AirPlay.

You will need an external HDMI-connected streaming device to run the Apple TV app ‘on’ your TV:
a supported Roku device, a supported Fire TV device, or a supported Apple TV set-top box.

If the TV has an HDMI input the Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K will work just fine.
Sounds like we will have to buy the boxes. The TV will never won't support Apple TV without them? Not sure I want to spend $200 for the box.
