I am wondering if there are any risks in upgrading to macOS Catalina from El Capitan?
A friend's MacBook is still running on El Capitan and they need an upgrade.
I have heard rumors that there could issues if someone upgrades macOS from El Capitan to Catalina, is that true?
A backup would be recommended I imagine.

First, it would have to be from 2012 or newer.

A backup is always required when doing a major upgrade.
32 bit apps will not run in Catalina.
https://www.stclairsoft.com/Go64/index.html will tell you what you have that is 32 bit that needs updating to work with Catalina.
