Display cables needed for models without a USB-C connection

I want to use my 2009 iMac (with Mini DisplayPort) as an external display for my 2015 MacBook Pro (with Thunderbolt port). What cables will I need in order to do this? The info I‘ve found so far only applies to newer models with a USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port, so that doesn’t really help with this scenario.

The late 2013 iMac uses Thunderbolt 1 and the 2017 iMac has Thunderbolt 3. Will the simple all-in-one USB C to Mini DisplayPort Cable cable available for around 15 bucks on Amazon work SOLELY for that purpose? Using a 2011/2012 iMac as an external display for MacBook Pro 2020? I wish to use my older iMac as a external display for my MacBook Pro. I understand I need a mini-Display to USB-C adapter, then a male to male mini-display to mini display cord. Does anyone know if this is correct and will it work before purchasing the cords/adapters? Thanks in advance

Target Display and Port confusion Can I use my iMac mid 2011 with thunderbolt 1 as my target display to Macbook Pro 2020. I can't find thunderbolt to usb c cables. Most of the cables are the mini display port cables which are not supported by the iMacs with thunderbolt 1 ports. My question is whether it is possible to use or I should not expect?

Target display mode requires macOS High Sierra or earlier on the iMac used as the external display. It does not work with macOS Mojave or later.
