Transferring Hi8 videos to an external drive via MacBook Pro

I want to transfer old Hi8 videos to an external drive and I only seem to be able to do this by using iMovie which entails uploading the video to iMovie, editing and then saving the final product to my external drive. My question: is there a way of transferring the raw video to the external drive without having to edit it on iMovie first?

I am not the best person here to answer this as I don't use iMovie 10 but to import onto an external hard drive then the library has to be on the external hard drive. In other words create a new library on the external hard drive. And then import into a new event in this new library.

This is from iMovie help.
