My phone number

How do I add my phone number to my apple id? I have tried to add it in settings but I can't receive any messages or calls from the number to verify it.

iPhone 7, iOS 13

You need to change the number on your Apple ID. After the change, allow up to 24 hours for the change to sync. Before trying to make the change, sign out of Messages/FaceTime.
