Drag and drop question

I have a MacBook pro mid-2015 running High Sierra. One thing I really don't like (and have been living with a long time) is that when I'm trying to drag and drop a file into a folder sitting on my desktop, the folder pops open. Then it's 50/50 whether the file will drop into the folder or not when I release. Is there some setting that will take me back to the good old days where I can reliably drag and drop a file into a folder and be sure that it gets in there, instead of landing back on my desktop? Many thanks.

When you drag and drop a file onto a folder, there is a moment when a semi-transparent, dimmer rectangle surrounds the folder, and that is your cue to release the dragged item. If you hesitate any longer the folder will open, where you can then also release the item.
