Can I use a mid 2010 27-inch iMac (OXS 10.11.6) as a display in the target display mode for a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) using a thunderbolt cable?

tl;dr it's the same connector, and thunderbolt carries displayport signals it just multiplex them with what I've come to understand is pci-express signals

All the instructions I have looked at ask me to use a mini display port to mini display port cable for the combination of machines I have.
Do you think it should work even with a thunderbolt cable?
Yep the last Q & A in the last link you shared answers my question. Thanks a lot. I basically cant use a thunderbolt cable for the Macs I have. Need a mini display cable.
Still wondering why though, since the thunderbolt cable just seems like a mini display cable with additional features.
