Voice-over won't record on I-Movie from my MacBook Air

I'm trying to record a voice-over on an art class video using the computer microphone. I have the settings on iMovie to the system microphone, mute is not checked, the system settings look good and the countdown and recording show that it's happening...just not picking up and recording any sound when I talk.
