Apps not visible

can anyone tell me why my apps are sometimes not visible and I can’t access them. I feel there must be some setting that is hiding them. I have scrolled through the home screen as one respondent suggested but they are not there. Yet they are listed when I go into Settings although I can’t open them. This is causing me and my 5 year old son no end of angst! Thanks
