iPod Nano (6th Gen) not synchronising

I can connect my iPod Nano (6th Gen) via USB, it is recognised, pops up in Finder and the home screen, then drops immediately leaving the entry in Finder attempting to load data. Have reset the iPod, and Mac which is running macOS Catalina, 10.15.4. Effect is that none of the media on the iPod is changed. Any attempt to restore the iPod fails in a similar way, dialogue opens, I select restore, the dialog reflects this and then the iPod disconnects.

So with the new lead the connection of the iPod is sustained. However, when you select the entry in Finder or Music, the page indicates that it is loading. Eventually the screen saver kicks in and on return the iPod is dismounted, but the entry in the Finder and Music pages for it remains. Stalemate!
