Windows 10 installed on an external hard drive

Hi! I had windows 10 installed through bootcamp because I need certain programs to complete homework assignments for my classes. However, I don't have enough space to install the programs I need. Is there any way to install windows through an external hard drive? I've searched it up, and I found two youtubers who suggest installing either parallels or vmfusion. I've tried this but it wasn't running the way I hoped.

I normally go on campus to complete my assignments but we are supposed to stay home because of COVID-19. Please if anyone knows of a different way to do it, let me know.

By the way, my laptop is running yosemite.

Consider using a Virtual Machine (VM) for Windows-only compatible programs. I use it all the time. Basically, its no more than Windows-in-a-window. All would be accessed and would operate as desired on the VM. Virtual Machine applications include VMWare Fusion and Parallels. Learn more here: What Is a Virtual Machine? - VMware Support.

Store the Windows Virtual Machine on an External Hard Drive.

Point Being:

That’s how you could use an external drive to install windows. Import the Virtual Machine into the VM Library from the external hard drive and it’s installed. Also, run the Virtual Machine off of the External Drive.
