Windows 10 installed on an external hard drive

Hi! I had windows 10 installed through bootcamp because I need certain programs to complete homework assignments for my classes. However, I don't have enough space to install the programs I need. Is there any way to install windows through an external hard drive? I've searched it up, and I found two youtubers who suggest installing either parallels or vmfusion. I've tried this but it wasn't running the way I hoped.

I normally go on campus to complete my assignments but we are supposed to stay home because of COVID-19. Please if anyone knows of a different way to do it, let me know.

By the way, my laptop is running yosemite.

Store a Virtual Machine(VM) on an External Hard Drive:

Consider using a Virtual Machine (VM) for Windows-only compatible programs. I use it all the time. Basically, its no more than Windows-in-a-window. All would be accessed and would operate as desired on the VM. Virtual Machine applications include VMWare Fusion and ParallelsLearn more here: What Is a Virtual Machine? - VMware Support.
