2008 MacBook Pro Upgrade

I have an early 2008 MacBook Pro. It’s currently running MacOS X 10.6.8. Can I upgrade it to anything newer? I tried to install El Capitan and it said it cannot be installed on my laptop.

Turns out that the 2008 MacBook Pro that can be upgraded is the aluminum one.
