Stolen iPhone

Hi,

My iPhone 11 Pro got stolen. I turned on "Lost mode" on Find my, created a message and so on. The following evening a got an InfoSMS from Apple saying that my iPhone was found. Followed by a link to the last reported location. I followed the link and typed my Apple ID's username and password. The map opened, started "locating" then just bugged out, couldn't show a location and my device suddenly went invisible in the Find my iPhone list of "All Devices". However, I can still see it in my iCloud account as a device. What could be the possible reason for that? Are there any other Apple-proven techniques for finding an iPhone?

Thanks,

Stace

Based upon your description, I suspect that you were scammed into providing your Apple ID credentials by the thief. After you place your iPhone in "Lost Mode," Apple will not send a SMS message informing you that your iPhone was found.

Read: Locate a lost or stolen device - Apple Support which states in part:

"If you activate Mark As Lost

The missing device is remotely locked. If you have Apple Pay set up on the device, it is disabled. A confirmation email is sent to the primary email address associated with your Apple ID. When you recover your device, you will need to unlock it with your passcode."

The confirmation email only verifies that the device was placed in Lost Mode. If you supplied a custom message the thief most likely sent the SMS text.
