group messaging
If I turn off group messaging and iMessage so that I can send a mass text to individuals, what happens when I turn it back on? Those messages all stay as individual texts, they don't become group texts?

What is your goal here?
To send mass text to individual users? If so you don't need to turn those off. Because responses will come from individual users.
If you turn those off you're still sending it as an MMS and everyone will still see each other responses.
