i am passing on my old phone to my child and need to unlock it so he can use his sim card

If the phone is locked to your carrier, and it is different from his carrier, you need to follow these instructions—>How to unlock your iPhone for use with a different carrier - Apple Support
Then you just need to insert his SIM.
