My Apple TV is connected to my TV via HDMI port.

I used this set-up (hdmi for video, optical for audio) for several years, before I replaced the hifi with Homepods. I did find lip-sync was not great with some ATV apps and there was no easy way to fix it. There should be some old Apple discussions on this topic that may help you. E.g.
