Install Mojave on an external drive

I have a MacBook Pro late 2011with HighSierra and I would like to use it to install Mojave on an external drive.

I have "Install Mojave" on a USB-Stick and the external drive connected to my MacBook. I started it with CMD+R and then wanted to use "Install MacOS" to install it on the external drive.

I remember I once did a similar thing where I was offered a choice of the OS and where I wanted to transfer it to. This time all it offers me is El Capitan (not HighSierra) but does not show the Mojave USB-stick.

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.15

Mojave isn't compatible with your Mac model.

Both Macs would need to be 2012 or newer models, or earlier desktop Mac Pros if they've been upgraded with a Metal-capable graphics card.

That doesn't matter. The Mojave installer cannot be used on your Mac.
