When opening "All my files" in M/S Word for Mac I am unable to click and open any file in fact the drop downs on the top bar are all black

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
What version of macOS are you now using, and is this version of Word from Office 2008/2011 for Mac, or if on Catalina, the most current version of Office 365/Office 2019 for Mac? This information matters.
