account balances

I am fairly new to numbers and was wondering if anyone out there can help me with a budget spreadsheet I'm creating.

I am trying to keep a running balance of my checking account in the 'Balances' cell ($5000). How do I Deduct or Credit the balances cell by entering a $11000 transaction on the date of 26th?

Thanks!

assuming that:

the Debit column is column D and

the credits are in column E and

the first two rows are header rows

select cell H1 (the cell with "$5000.00" in it) and type (or copy and paste from here:

=sum(E)-sum(D)
