I've just uploaded a number of video files into iMovie, but they just look like black strips. Some of them have a preview thumbnail available, but they still appear black in playback. Please advise.

What versions of iMovie and operating system are you using?
For black videos sometimes the problem can be cured by lowering the resolution a bit. Try importing the clips at a lower resolution, or, export to your desktop and use QuickTimePlayer to export at a lower resolution. Then import the clips into iMovie.
