desktop icons disappeared

I have a 5 year-old MacBook OS 10.14.6 and after restarting the computer, my desktop icons disappeared. In preferences it only gives me the option of showing "recent" on the desktop, of course most of the icons were placed there months or years ago. How can I restore what was there? Have the folders disappeared from the hard drive or just the desktop?

Are you referring to your dock items or the items that appear from using finder preferences?
