I've tried all of the suggestion I can find. Compressor will not open but to a gray screen with a black square in the lower left. I've deleted the app and reinstalled to no avail. Any suggestions?

There may be some residual stuff left over from a previous job.
Try cancelling jobs in the Preferences>Advanced>Reset Queue menu:
Repair may also sort it.

I don't know what you mean open left and right side bars. Perhaps the screen shot will answer.
Could you post a screenshot? Can you open the left and right sidebars?
What are your computer specs from About This Mac. What version of Compressor, and what OS?

I don’t know. You might try running diagnostics on the system and redownload from the App Store.
