The letters appear to assist in dialing phone numbers that are listed as something like 1800 FLOWERS or some such nonsense.

If you go under contacts and search, you can use letters and the contact will popup.

If you have a contact named John Smith, typing the number keys corresponding to the first few letters of his first or last name will bring up the contact on the keypad, ready to be dialed.
