Can you upgrade directly to Catalina from Sierra, or must you upgrade in steps through some/all of the OS between them?

"* To upgrade from Lion or Mountain Lion, first upgrade to El Capitan, then upgrade to Catalina. To find your macOS version, Mac model, memory, and storage space, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu . If your Mac isn't compatible with macOS Catalina, the installer will let you know"

So, since El Capitan is earlier than Sierra, it is implied that one can directly upgrade? I thought of that, but didn't want to screw anything up. Missed the 'installer will let you know' part. Thanks, again.
You can upgrade directly assuming your Mac supports Catalina.
