How do I send a screenshot via text message, directly from the thumbnail ?
there is no longer a message icon in my list of choices when I press the “forward” icon in the top right corner of the thumbnail.

When you take your screenshot, tap the share icon on the top right corner. This article talks about your sharing options: Share photos and videos on iPhone - Apple Support
In the list you should see messages. If not, swipe all the way to the right side, and tap the three dots more icon. This is where you can edit the list and add Messages: Install and manage app extensions on iPhone - Apple Support
