I have a MacBook Pro 2013 (the one with the CD drive in it still). It will not load past the log in screen. I have tried to load the disk utilities to reinstall the OS or even erase the drive and start from scratch but it just keeps spinning on Examining Volumes and won't go any further, I've waited a few hours.
I've tried to reset the NVRAM and it didn't seem to make a difference. Am I SOL?
How long do you wait for it to finish examining volumes? If it’s doing a complete fsck it can take quite a while. Give it at least an hour. If that fails you may have a bad drive. Can you load from the installation media?
I missed the age of your computer. You should be able to boot to diagnostic mode. Shut it down, then start it and as soon as the chime sounds hold the CMD+R keys until the Apple logo appears.

When you say installation media, do you mean USB? If so, no I do not have anything to boot from. I could however get something possibly on CD from Apple if i NEED to. I will try again to complete the Examining Volumes as I am not certain how long I waited.
THIS POST SAYS IT'S SOLVED, I DIDN'T MEAN TO CLICK THAT. IT IS NOT SOLVED.
There is nothing plugged in to the computer besides the power. Actually something is happening now. The screen has turned black and there is an arrow so it's obviously trying to do something. I will keep you posted.

Ok! So the computer has shut off and won't turn back on. I'm convinced that it could just be that the battery is dead because it wasn't plugged in before but has been recently. I'm going to wait until the battery has charged and then try again. UGH!!
That's how i booted the disk utilities and it keeps saying examining volumes. I don't get to choose a drive to fix.
See the update I made to my post. Your computer is new enough to support loading with CMD+R.

I saw your reply after I updated my post. How long did you wait? Have you disconnected all external devices? If the disk check never finishes you have a failed drive.
How long should I wait for the “Examining volumes” to complete?
we are going on 3.5 hours and it’s still spinning on examining volumes
Do you have a disk in the internal DVD drive? 3.5 hours should be more than enough. Your computer has a hardware failure. Have you tried running diagnostics from the boot menu?
There is no disk in the drive. I’m not really sure how to run diagnostics, although I don’t get very far to try anything.
