Hi I just updated my computer and my word / excel are not compatible with the new updates do I have to purchase a new app for word and excel?

Office 2011 and older are no longer supported by Microsoft at all and are not compatible with macOS Catalina.
If you are running Office 2016, you need to apply the available updates from Microsoft.
Office 2019 and Office 365 are compatible with macOS Catalina.
You can also try LibreOffice, It's free and opens Office files.
