can i upgrade from OS 10.8.5 to catalina?

Can I upgrade my mid-2012 MacBook Pro directly from OS X 10.8.5 to Catalina? Or, should I upgrade to an OS that is a bit older than Catalina for the best outcome in terms of speed?

No, you can't. Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download El Capitan, High Sierra, or Mojave first.

Remember that Catalina won't run 32 bit apps, i.e. Office 2011. Always make a full backup of your drive on an external drive before making an upgrade.
