how can I update my ipod too the lastest software version

when it keeps saying its updated but its not the latest so its running very very slow

If you are running iOS 9.35, you have a 5 gen iPod (does it have a button on the back for a strap. If so, it cannot up upgraded beyond 9.3.5.
