I use macbook air 2017 and when I have an update but when I try updating, it only restarts and doesn't update. what do i do?

Try downloading the standalone Combo Update from here, https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2028?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US once downloaded double-click to install.
If you can, try connecting your mac to your router using a cabled connection, this should provide a more robust connection
and a speedier download.
What OS are you running and what update are you trying to install?
