Inaccurate step tracking

I recently received a new Apple Watch 3 and it is paired with a new iphone XS.

It does not seem to accurately record the number of steps.

The activity circle seems to progress but the steps don't seem to increase at the same pace.

If I count my steps then check with the app they aren't the same or even close.

Is there something else I need to do?

Try resetting your fitness calibration data

iPhone>Watch>Privacy>Reset Fitness Calibration Data

I would also force reset the watch by holding in the crown and side button for 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo then release.
