Do you mean you have the same photo several times within the same album?
Adding a photo to an album does not create duplicates. You can add a photo to many albums, without creating duplicates.
But if you are seeing the same photo twice in the same album, there is a duplicate photo in your library. Then compare the Info for each photo (with ⌘I ) and pick the best version as the keeper - the one with the largest width and height in pixel will have the best resolution. Delete the other version with ⌘⌫ .
