Go to the System/lApple ID/Overview preference pane and Sign Out of the current account. Then Sign in with your other Apple ID and password.

My main issue was when trying to update native apps it would not accept my alternative icloud account.
I switched back to the original ID and got the updates done, however my question remains, is there a way to eliminate the original apple ID used when first bought the computer and continue with the alternate for future updates?
Apps are locked into whatever account was used to purchase/install them originally. If that account was someone else's account you'll have to repurchase them again on your account.
Why do you want to change accounts?
