Lost sound iMac Mohave.

Today, the day after Christmas, I started my iMac and was notified that there were updates. I clicked on OK to install all except Catalina. I found that now I have no sound. Thanks for the delayed Christmas present. Apple. Unfortunately this is a common problem with Apple. They give you an update which damages the operating system. I am not going to YELL because I am pretty sure no-one can hear me. My first question is, if I upgrade to Catalina, will that solve the problem? If it will not, how do I get my sound back?
