How are you trying to update it? If over the air, you need to be connected to WiFi and your battery needs to be at least at 50%. If you have skipped a number of updates, it’s often difficult to update over the air and if that is your issue, connect your iPhone to your home computer and do the update using iTunes. You will need to ensure you are running the most current version of iTunes.
