catalina upgrade has completely messed up my desktop

I cannot open ANYTHING from my desktop. Pictures, documents, folders...nothing opens. Is anyone else having this issue? Is there a "fix" for it?

What is the point of all these upgrades and updates if they all require further upgrading and updating a short-time after to correct problems that arise from installation?

Can this be reverted? Can I go back to the way things were? I am too old to be constantly getting used to a new OS and then having it backfire. Perpetually updating when the developers realize "oh, this thing is full of bugs" is not very productive, is it?

Any ideas? Suggestions?

You could try this: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder - Apple Support

Or you could try reinstalling the combo update: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL2028?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Or you can revert to your backup: Revert your Mac to a previous macOS version - Apple Support

I understand when you attempt to open certain folders nothing happens.

In addition to Barney-15E's recommendations please determine if the same problems occur in "Safe Mode": Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac. Then, restart your Mac normally and determine if the problem perists.
