Turn off and on your Bluetooth settings through System Preferences while leaving the bluetooth device turned on.
Then if it does not see your bluetooth device, turn it off and on. It needs to pair again. If you don't have a wired mouse, get one.

Thanks for the info Brody. I did try this numerous times as well as checking battery connections etc.
Made it to the Apple Genius Bar today and after a quick check was told it was a software problem.
Suggestion made by "Genius" not to invest in a wired mouse. Will just use trackpad and see if software issue gets resolved!
