USB storage devices for iMac Late 2012

The Apple Store has a selection of storage devices. But, the filter for Mac Compatibility doesn't include the iMac Late 2012. Would it be a problem to select one with the correct connection? My computer has USB and Thunderbolt ports. Or would there be would another issue to consider?

You're welcome! Good for you! Sadly some folks would buy a drive with the wrong connection and then blame Apple for changing the connection.

I suggested using USB 3.0 over Thunderbolt 2 for a couple of reasons.

  1. Thunderbolt drives and drives enclosures are very expensive.
  2. USB 3.0 is more than fast enough for both spinning HDs and SSDs.

The Late 2012 iMac only has Thunderbolt 2, so your best bet is to just get a USB 3.0 external drive.

For some examples, see > https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/ESU3M2.0B/

or > https://www.bestbuy.com/site/seagate-backup-plus-slim-2tb-external-usb-3-0-portable-hard-drive-black/6335606.p? which are both more reliable than the WD equivalent.
