iPad Pro keyboard

I continually get “this accessory is not supported” message when trying to use the keyboard accessory. It is a genuine apple keyboard. The operating system I am using is the latest iPad iOS 13. Equipment approx 3 years old. What can I do to resolve the issue without having to replace the keyboard?
