Backup failure on external hard drive

Although I have deleted a number of previous backups to free up space, I cannot get my mac to back up on my time machine external drive. I have 2019GB free in a 1TB drive. Do I need to erase all and start again afresh? If so how do I go about this procedure?

iMac, macOS 10.12

Open Disk Utility and choose the uppermost, unindented icon representing the entire drive (you may have to go to the upper left and click on "Edit" to reveal it). Then Erase.
